VOR Navigation Simulator – Free Online Training for Pilots

Practice VOR navigation with our interactive flight simulator. Perfect for student pilots preparing for PPL, instrument rating (IFR), and professional aviation training.

Quick Start Guide

Simulator Controls:

  • 🎯 Move Aircraft: Click or drag on the map
  • 🧭 Set Course: Use the OBS slider (0-359°)
  • 📍 Blue Circle: VOR station location
  • ✈️ Red Triangle: Your aircraft position

Instrument Reading:

  • 🔵 Blue Needle: Selected OBS course
  • 🟡 Yellow Needle (CDI): Course deviation
  • 📊 TO/FROM: Direction relative to station
  • 📐 CDI Scale: ±10° full deflection

Current Readings:

Selected Radial: 360°
Aircraft Radial: 360°
CDI Deflection:
TO/FROM: TO

Aircraft Position

Understanding VOR Navigation

  • OBS (Omni Bearing Selector): Sets your desired course (0-359°)
  • CDI (Yellow Needle): Shows if you’re left or right of the selected course
  • Blue Needle: Shows the selected OBS course
  • TO/FROM: Indicates whether flying the selected course takes you TO or FROM the station

Pro Tips

  • When TO is displayed, fly toward the CDI needle to get on course
  • When FROM is displayed, fly away from the CDI needle (reverse sensing)
  • A centered CDI means you’re on the selected radial
  • Each dot on the CDI scale represents approximately 2° off course

Practice Exercises

Exercise 1: Basic Orientation

  1. Set OBS to 360° (North)
  2. Move aircraft directly north of VOR
  3. Notice: CDI centered, TO indication
  4. Move aircraft south of VOR
  5. Notice: CDI centered, FROM indication

Exercise 2: Intercepting Radials

  1. Set OBS to 090° (East)
  2. Place aircraft northwest of VOR
  3. Notice CDI deflection to the right
  4. Move aircraft to center the CDI
  5. You’re now on the 090° radial!

Exercise 3: Station Passage

  1. Set OBS to 180° (South)
  2. Place aircraft north of VOR
  3. Move aircraft south through VOR
  4. Watch TO change to FROM
  5. Notice CDI remains centered

Exercise 4: Reverse Sensing

  1. Set OBS to 270° (West)
  2. Place aircraft east of VOR
  3. Note FROM indication
  4. CDI shows opposite correction
  5. Fly away from needle to center

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Chasing the needle: Make small corrections, don’t overcontrol
  • Ignoring TO/FROM: Always check before making corrections
  • Confusing radials: Remember, radials radiate FROM the station
  • Forgetting reverse sensing: With FROM, fly away from the needle
